The owner of this website is responsible for processing the personal data gathered through consulado-ecuatoriano.com. This website is an independent informational directory about the consulates of Ecuador in the United States. It is not an official site of the Government of Ecuador or of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador (Cancillería del Ecuador).

2. Data we collect

This website collects the following types of data:

  • Browsing data: IP address, browser type, pages viewed, time spent on the site and referral source. This information is gathered automatically through analytics cookies (Google Analytics).
  • Contact form data: if you reach out to us by email, we will keep your email address and the content of your message.
  • Advertising data: Google AdSense may collect browsing-behavior data in order to display personalized ads.
  • Questions put to the virtual assistant: the text of the questions you type into the chat, with personal data automatically stripped out before storage, together with the topic detected and the pages offered. Section 6 covers this in detail.

This website does not ask for sensitive data, payment details or information from personal identity documents, and needs none of them to provide any service. Should you type any of them into the virtual assistant on your own initiative, they are automatically removed before the conversation is stored, as explained in section 6.

The processing of your data relies on your consent, given when you accept the use of cookies, and on the legitimate interest of the site owner in producing statistical analysis of the website. For contact data, the legal basis is carrying out the communication you requested.

6. Conversational assistant

This site includes a virtual assistant that answers questions about consular procedures. Because it processes what you type, we explain it in detail.

What is sent in order to answer you

Your message is sent to a language-model provider, which drafts the answer from the verified information on our pages. We do not send it your name, your email address or your IP address.

What we store, and why

So that we can tell what visitors need and improve our guides, we keep:

  • The text of your question, with personal data automatically stripped out before it is stored.
  • The topic detected (passport, appointment, city, and so on) and whether the question could be answered.
  • The pages you were offered and whether you opened any of them.
  • An anonymous session identifier, which is not linked to your identity.

Phone numbers, email addresses and digit sequences that could correspond to an identity document are replaced with the marker [dato] before anything is written to our database.

We do not need your personal data

The assistant will never ask you for your name, your cédula, your passport or your phone number, and it does not need them to help you. We recommend that you do not type them: although we strip them out before storing the conversation, the message itself does reach the model provider so that the answer can be generated.

The conversation in your browser

So you do not lose your place when you move between pages, the conversation is kept in your browser's local storage (sessionStorage). It is erased when you close the tab, it is not an advertising cookie and it is not shared with third parties.

No connection to advertising

What you ask the assistant is never combined with Google AdSense and is not used to personalize the ads you see.

7. Data retention

Browsing data gathered through analytics cookies is kept for a maximum of 26 months (the standard Google Analytics period). Emails are stored only for as long as needed to answer your inquiry, up to a maximum of 12 months.

The text of questions put to the virtual assistant is kept for a maximum of 90 days. After that it is deleted, and all that remains is aggregate data that identifies no one: the topic of the question, whether it could be answered, and the date.

8. Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Rectify inaccurate data
  • Request erasure of your data
  • Request portability of your data to another provider
  • Object to the processing of your data
  • Withdraw your consent at any time

9. International data transfers

Google Analytics and Google AdSense may transfer data to servers located in the United States. Google relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and/or the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission to safeguard these transfers.

The questions you put to the virtual assistant are processed by a language-model provider whose servers may be located outside the European Union. Only the text of your message is sent — never your name, your email address or your IP address.
